PokerStars Signs On As WPT Season VII Sponsor
May 11, 2009
PokerStars has signed on to sponsor Season 7 of the World Poker Tour.
This will give Poker Stars even wider worldwide attention than it’s already received (arguably ever since then-amateur PokerStars player Chris Moneymaker took down the top prize at the 2003 World Series of Poker, proving that anyone really can win), as the sponsorship deal includes all televised WPT Season VII tournaments in Europe (including Germany and Italy) and the U.S., Canada, and the Netherlands.
This also means that, at least in terms of all WPT coverage in the U.S., Full Tilt Poker is out and Poker Stars is in. This is a big deal considering that these two leading poker sites have been neck-and-neck in a near heads-up battle for top position seemingly since their inceptions.
It seems PokerStars and the World Poker Tour will be working very closely to expand both companies’ reach, starting with a Spanish-language and Portuguese-language televised broadcasts for localized events in Latin America, including native commentators.
PokerStars is also the major sponsor of the European Poker Tour, and Latin American Poker Tour (LAPT), and the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT).
